Crocheted Baby Hat

An easy way to give your new arrival a handmade gift.  This hat is worked in the round, and uses only the half-double crochet stitch and a few increases.  We used Blue Sky Woolstok for our sample, but you can use any soft, worsted weight yarn.

You will need:

Two worsted weight yarns

Crochet hook

Tapestry needle

Directions:

Begin with a magic ring.

Row 1: Ch1, work 8 hdc's into ring.

Row 2: Ch1, work 2 hdc's into each stitch.  Connect to the first stitch you did using a slip stitch.

Row 3: Change colors.  To do this you will fasten off, leaving a 4-5 inch tail.  Tie your new color yarn onto your old color yarn tail and slide the knot down close the stitches.  Put your crochet hook into the first stitch and pull the new color through to the front.  Ch1. This will count as your first stitch.  (Work 2 hdc's into the next stitch, then work 1 hdc into the following stitch.) Repeat 16 times. Connect using a slip stitch.

Row 4: Ch1. (2 hdc into next stitch, 1 hdc into the next 2 stitches) Repeat around.  Connect using a slip stitch.

Row 5: Change colors.  Repeat row 4.

At this point you should have a circle like this-

Row 9: Change colors. Ch1. Hdc in each stitch.

Rows 10-14: Repeat Row 9.

Row 15: Change colors. Ch1. (2 hdc in next stitch, 1 hdc in next 5 stitches).  Connect with a slip stitch.

Rows 16-22: Ch1. Hdc in each stitch. Connect with a slip stitch.  Continue to change colors every two rounds

Bind off.

Weave in all your tails using a tapestry needle.
